The Magyars quickly became sedentary people, converted en masse to Roman Catholicism, and were a part of Western European civilization by the 11th century. Hungarians joined the Crusades with their German and French neighbors, and many early Hungarian kings began to see the Cumans in an increasingly negative light, especially when Cuman raids continued into the early 13th century. To counter the Cuman raids, Hungarian King Andrew II (r. 1205-1235) settled Teutonic knights in different parts of Hungary to act as buffers against the Cumans and other nomadic hordes (Vásáry 2009, 32). The Teutonic Knights helped repel the most destructive Cuman raids on Hungary and prevent worse things from happening, but they could not end the Cumans’ influence on central Europe.
